Salmonella Scare

For now the origination of the salmonella outbreak in tomatoes is still unknown. They say that it may now be a combination of tomatoes, lettuce, cilantro, and jalapeno peppers that are suspect. Watch out what you order at restaurants and when at home….wash thoroughly!

The Best Pizza in the Heart of Yukon

Okay anyone within driving distance of Yukon MUST take it upon themselves to drive to Italian Jim’s Pizzeria!

It’s by far the cleanest pizza restaurant I’ve ever seen just to start with. It’s got about 6 booths on one side by the counter, and the second room, where the salad bar is, is full of tables. The owner and his son fill the restaurant with creative art and lighting glass pieces, that are actually hand blown by them personally.

To get to the pizza….YUM! The crust is perfect. Most crusts are too gooey for me. Theirs is perfectly crunchy without being too hard. They use a tangy cheese on their pizza’s that gives it something special. It’s not like any other pizza I’ve had. And this cheese makes it re-heatable without ruining the texture or taste of the pizza. It still comes out fresh like it was just made.

For those of you who re-heat any chain store pizza you know that it hardens the cheese slightly and is never quite the same as when you first get it. Italian Jim’s Pizza is good no matter how many times you re-heat it.

Usually I order Papa John’s but no more. I actually crave this new pizza from Italian Jim’s and it’s worth the extra drive to Yukon to pick my own up. Side note if you live with in range…they will deliver to you at no extra charge. I just don’t live close, so I WILL be making the trek to pick up mine.

Stop by and try it…you’ll be happy you did. And get their root beer too…it’s from a vendor in Oklahoma and is the best around.

Constant Cravings

My new favorite drink is found at Chili’s. It’s not one readily found on the menu, but if you ask for it they will make it.

They have a Blackberry Lemonade that is to die for. It has to be made with the right amount of Blackberry syrup in it to give it that zip that keeps me coming back for more.

All I know is that now I’m on a hunt to find the recipe so I can make my own. Blackberry Tea doesn’t cut it either.
When you’re at Chili’s next, ask them for chips, salsa, and a side of ranch (another favorite) and then ask if they make Blackberry lemonade. My mouth is watering now just thinking about it.

When they bring it out, the blackberry syrup will be sitting at the bottom. Stir it up really well and then sit back and enjoy.

*Note: Again it has to have the right balance of lemonade and blackberry, or it won’t be as good as it could. Ask your server if they normally make that drink. If they don’t ask for someone there that does. It makes all the difference in the world.

Let me know if you try it and what you think!

Louie’s on the Lake

Louie’s on the Lake by Lake Hefner, in Oklahoma City, is a great place to meet after work for conversation. The sun can be watched as it hits the horizon and lowers over the lake. It’s a very noisy atmosphere, but if you’re into a very busy environment than you shouldn’t mind.

The food is decent enough, but it’s not a destination place for it’s food. The drinks taste great, but aren’t stiff enough to please those that are looking for a punch with their cocktails. They still charge like their adding alcohol, but you’re basically paying for the other ingredients in your drinks as it’s most alcohol free.

For me that’s fine as I’m not a huge drinker. I can have 4 drinks and it’s like drinking water, but if I’m going to drink a drink that’s almost a virgin…I’d like to pay for it as if it had no alcohol in it. They’re making a killing on their mixed drinks. I’d advise if you’re going here for drinks to order a beer or straight liquor if that’s what you’re in to.

Louie’s service is great. There are plenty of staff on hand to take care of following up to service any needs. They also have a few key staff members rotating at all times to keep an eye out for the restaurant crowd.

Overall I give Louie’s a 3 out of 5 stars for quality of food and drink, but a 5 out of 5 for seating and it’s social score. Parking is hard. Get there early enough to snag a spot or you’ll be parking in the parking lots down the lake and walking to the restaurant.

5 stars for Vivo Italian

Every time I eat at this restaurant I’m more and more impressed. They’ve recently done some renovations that allow more privacy for families or couples. It gives it more of a cozy environment, allowing a more enjoyable experience all the way around.

Unfortunately this restaurant isn’t in the most accessible location. If you don’t live nearby you’re not aware of it. It’s tucked in the Walnut Shopping Center on the NW corner of 122nd Street and N. Rockwell in North OKC. Each time I go it’s only getting busier and busier, so I know the secret is out when it comes to their menu and prices, but I thought I’d post on them again.

One of my new favorites there is their salmon salad. IT is something I crave when I’ve not had it in a while. It’s a healthy sized portion of shredded salmon on a large bed of green leafy leaves. It’s got a lemon sauce mixed throughout but comes with a special oil dressing on the side. I don’t know what special ingredient they put in this thing, but I could eat three of them in one sitting. Even though one is enough to fill me up…I just don’t want to stop eating it.

If EVER in OKC…don’t go to a chain ‘cookie cutter’ Italian restaurant. You’ve got to go to VIVO Italian, one of the sweetest places in OKC.

I give them 5 stars!

Health Alert at Restaurants

Although I love lemon in my water, I’ll pass from now on. Please take a minute to watch this video.

A Surprising Find

Shiki Restaurant in OKC has always been a great place for lunch. I’ve been a few times, but with so many Japanese restaurants to choose from here in the metro it’s hard to remember which one I like best. It has always been good, but not someplace that stood out for me as exceptional.

We went last week again for my dad’s birthday. He’d never gone and had driven by a few times, curious to what it was about. I looked forward to trying it again to see how they handled my husband’s food, as he’d never been either.

If any of you have read through this site, than you know my husband’s food allergy situation. Wheat is not only a danger, but a threat to his existence. So anything cooked on a hibachi with Soy sauce would be detrimental to his health. Usually at most Japanese places, we struggle to communicate to the cooks who don’t speak much English. We cross our fingers and hold our breath that no cross contamination happens with my husband’s food.

Shiki exceeded my hopes for a night out with my family. We had no communication barrier, as the cook spoke excellent English. Instead of cooking my husband’s food ’special’, which would leave me watching the grill the whole time to make sure his food stayed seperate, he cooked all ours special to make sure no one had to watch out for anything.

All our food was cooked with butter, and olive oil with no soy sauce. Now all we had to do was sit back and enjoy the show he put on, rather than sitting and waiting to see how how the ’special’ food was cooked. He took such good care of us and it left us all relaxed and able to celebrate what we were really there for.

I ordered the Hibachi Chicken, which is the most delicious thing I’ve ever tasted. Whatever I’d ordered in the past, was surpassed by this night’s dinner. It was exceptional and I can easily say that now they stand out as a place I’d remember to return to. In fact, I’m getting hungry just thinking about my meal.

The most enjoyable surprise was the melon soda at the end of the evening…

When I lived in Japan, we had concession machines on the side of the road that held everything from beer to soda’s. You could just pull your car over, drop in some yen, and keep on driving with your cold beverage. My favorite drink was this cool glass bottle of honeydew or melon soda, with a marble sealing up the top.

To open it, you had to push the marble down, which fell into place and would roll back up as you sipped to keep the liquid from spilling out to fast. It tasted awesome and it was a novelty item that was just too cool.

…I saw some couples ordering this same melon soda across the room, and almost did back flips. Could it be? My favorite drink from Japan? The bottle was the same, but surely it wasn’t the same flavor!?

We ordered a couple, and it tasted just like I remembered. It instantly took me back to a charmed time in life, and I felt 17 again sitting on an island drinking in island life.

If you’re in town you need to head to Shiki at either location, not just for their food and service, but to try their Japanese soda.

Dan McGuinness Pub

This place in Moore, Oklahoma is hidden treasure! An authentic German restaurant with a twist. Walking in, you feel right at home with the antique tables and decor. The hostesses greet you immediately and the staff take excellent care of you.

Their non-smoking section offers tall wooden booths with plenty of privacy, plus small flat screen TVs at each table. It’s perfect for the whole family or a quick work lunch. Either way you can dine and unwind with your loved ones or by yourself. Their smoking area is partitioned off, so you’re not bothered by any stray smoke or noise. They offer smoking in their pub, which has pool tables and large TV screens, and family dining in the restaurant. It’s a nice clean break between the two rooms.

Each time I’ve been I’ve been extremely pleased with the food and service. I loved everything thing I’ve tasted from their potato soup, their sausage and cheese board, fish n’ chips, and more. I tried Shepard’s pie for the first time a few weeks ago and was pleasantly surprised on how flavorful it was. It wasn’t bland or over the top. It was perfect and I plan on ordering it again when I go back.

This is definitely some place I would highly recommend. It’s easy on the pocket book with prices from $5 to $12 depending on what you’re in the mood for. Oh and a side note…their lite beer was to die for. I’m not a huge drinker but after one sip I could have been!

Dan McGuinness is also a great place for live music. If you’re in Moore, OK take a short drive from I-35 down 19th street to their very cool pub! Sit for a while, eat and drink, and be merry! It’s located at: 1003 SW 19th and their phone number is: 703-3DMP.

A Savannah Favorite

I just got back from a work trip in Savannah, where they had many delectable places to choose from. My favorite by far was Mrs. Wilkes Dining Room. A family style sit down dinner, where the tables seat up 10 to 12.

Our group could barely believe how much food was on the table. We had about 30 dishes covering the table top from sweet potatoes to fried chicken. All the country home cooking reminded me of my grandmother’s style…so good that you don’t care how fattening it is. It’s all accompanied with a pitcher of sweet tea.

Mrs. Wilkes started her career in 1943 at a boarding house, where her husband was staying. In ‘65 they bought the house and convert it to a restaurant. Word of mouth spread quickly of her home style cooking and people came in droves for her southern hospitality.

Her grandson and wife now run the restaurant. He told our group that Mrs. Wilkes traveled to many other countries to educate people on southern cooking. She was Savannah’s own tourist attraction.

I would highly recommend trying this if you ever travel to Savannah, GA. Not only is the food excellent, but the staff were quick and efficient. Some of the cooks are third generation; grand-daughters of the original cooks in Mrs. Wilkes kitchen. Everything we ate was mouth watering. I wanted to eat everything I saw, but there were just too many left overs to contemplate.

When you go…get ready to eat and eat and eat.  It’s all good.

I Love This Bar and Grill

From the padded tail gates, as guest seating, to the rhinestone studded saddle, Toby Keith’s I love this Bar and Grill has the most fun environment. It’s high ceilings and lights leave one staring in wonder, while waiting to be sat. Toby’s private balcony overlooks the entire restaurant, but is separated by plexi-glass, leaving onlookers a glimpse of the private dining.

Music pumps through the spacious restaurant, and overflows on the patio, which overlooks the riverwalk, in down town Oklahoma City. Large screens play in and outside, so no matter where you sit you’ve always got something to watch, whether it’s a Toby Keith video, or your favorite sports team playing. They’ve got a large stage at the back of the restaurant, where they provide live music on designated nights.

Their service is prompt and very family friendly. The bar sits to the back of the restaurant separate from the dining area, so anyone can have a good time. The tables are large four tops with wooden chairs, so you’d better get serious about sitting down to eat family style and dig in!

Anything on the menu is appetizing, from the children’s meal on up. My favorite is their burger and fries. My son always requests the chicken strips. And YES, my husband’s food allergies are more than compensated for. They’re very careful to take very very good care of him. His favorite thing on the menu is the ribs, which are the most tender I’ve ever eaten.

If ever visiting in OKC, or a local….you must come and fall in love with Toby’s Bar and Grill.
